Lucerne would certainly help break-up any subsoil tillage/compaction pans caused by the levelling process or get root penetration into buried silt layers. However lucerne roots wouldn't be able to break up iron/humus-pans. I found no evidence of any tillage pans in the Dalrymple's dune levelling operations, so I don't think it would be beneficial for breaking up subsoil impediments on their levelled dunes.

What about using lucerne as the first crop in the rotation after the surface optimisation, perhaps it may have a subsoiling effect whilst providing an economic return at the same time.
