IRRIG8: Centre Pivot Evaluation

This calibration tool is designed to meet the IrrigationNZ: NZ Irrigation System Performance Assessment Code of Practice – Part H: Centre Pivot. Download the code for more guidance. For a quick system “bucket test”, see the Centre Pivot Calibration tool.

NOTE: IRRIG8 does not store your data or keep any records. Leaving or refreshing this page will delete all your data, so print reports and export the data or graphs if you want to save them. To have a copy you can reload and edit, download the Save Session csv file and save it. This tool lets you upload it again to automatically repopulate all your data.

Beta version: See disclaimer at foot of page. User Guide here>

🌾 Centre Pivot Irrigation Evaluation v1.0.2

Performance assessment following the IrrigationNZ Code of Practice Part H, Section 3

πŸ’Ύ Save or Reload an Evaluation

Save everything entered on all tabs, plus the results, to a CSV file on your computer. Load it later to fill the calculator back in and recalculate.

Files stay on your computer; nothing is uploaded to the website. Loading replaces what is currently entered.

🚜 Machine
Full wetted radius beyond the end wheels. Blank or 0 if none.
Machine length + 75% of the end gun wetted radius
Optional. Leave blank to use the calculated value.
Any length near the centre with sprinklers off
360 for a full circle
Ο€ Γ— (effective radiusΒ² βˆ’ un-irrigated lengthΒ²) Γ— angle Γ· 360
Optional. Typical full-circle time at peak water use (S_N)
πŸ’¦ Sprinklers
Width of the wetted strip in the direction of travel
🎯 Target, Soil & Topography
Optional
Optional. Used with the lowest to estimate pressure variation
⚑ Flow & Energy
Wait until the flow is steady (up to 15 minutes)
Optional
Optional. From the power meter over the period below
πŸ“ Pressure Units
Results show both units
🏭 Headworks Pressures
πŸŒ‰ Pivot Lateral Pressures (upstream of regulators)

First reading at the first test point downstream of the elbow at the top of the inlet; last at the last outlet or end of the pipeline, upstream of any end gun booster pump.

e.g. 10 psi or 70 kPa
Optional. Added to the variation from field elevation
Advisory, default 40 kPa (Nelson and Senninger: at least 5 psi / 34 kPa). Below the Code Part H minimum of 20 kPa is always flagged.
πŸ’¦ Sprinkler Pressures (downstream of regulators)

Pitot tube or in-line gauge at eight sprinklers. Record the distance from the pivot centre if known.

SprinklerDistance (m)Pressure

Random 1
Random 2
Random 3
Random 4
🌬️ Weather During the Test
km/h Γ· 3.6. Monitor at least every 15 minutes
🌑️ Evaporation Control Collector

A collector identical to the test collectors, with a known volume of water, placed upwind of the test area. Each collector is corrected by the evaporation rate Γ— the time from when the machine passed its row to when it was read.

Uses the test collector diameter (Radial Tests tab)
Optional. Leave blank to use the calculated rate
🌱 Field Observations
Reported only; not used in calculations
Discharge falling outside the target area
πŸ’§ Radial Uniformity Tests

Two rows of collectors either side of a radial line, starting 20% of the way along the machine and running to just inside the wetted radius. Machines under 450 m effective radius: 40 collectors per row, up to 10 m apart, staggered. Longer machines: about 5 m mean spacing. Not in wheel tracks.

Run the machine as fast as possible while applying enough water to measure (ISO suggests 15 mm). Several tests in different positions are pooled into one overall result.

πŸ“„ Import Collector Readings from CSV (optional)

Columns: Row (1 or 2), Distance (m), Volume (mL), Time read (hh:mm, optional), Exclude (yes/no, optional), Reason (optional). A header row is allowed. Replaces the readings of the chosen test.

What is calculated (Code Part H, Section 3.2)

  • Distance-adjusted applied depth and low quarter distribution uniformity (DUlq), each test and pooled
  • Heermann-Hein uniformity coefficient (CU)
  • Machine speed, revolution time, flow from collectors and depth from total flow
  • Application intensity at 2/3 radius and the end of the machine, against soil infiltration
  • Lateral pressure loss, regulator inlet pressure, sprinkler pressure variation
  • Adjusted machine speed and timer setting for the target depth, excess water use factor, energy per mΒ³ and per ha mm
