IRRIG8: Travelling Irrigator Calibration

This calibration tool is designed to meet the IrrigationNZ: NZ Irrigation System Performance Assessment Code of Practice – Part F: Traveller. Download the code for more guidance.  For a more comprehensive assessment, see the Travelling Irrigator Evaluation tool.

NOTE: IRRIG8 does not store your data or keep any records. Leaving or refreshing this page will delete all your data, so print reports and export the data or graphs if you want to save them. To have a copy you can reload and edit, download the Save Session csv file and save it. This tool lets you upload it again to automatically repopulate all your data.

Beta version: See disclaimer at foot of page

💦 Travelling Irrigator Quick Check v1.0.0

Calibration check following the IrrigationNZ Code of Practice Part F, Section 2

💾 Save or Reload a Check

Save everything entered on all tabs, plus the results, to a CSV file on your computer. Load it later to fill the tool back in and recalculate.

Files stay on your computer; nothing is uploaded to the website. Loading replaces what is currently entered.

🚜 Machine
Sets how the wetted area is worked out
🎯 Wetted Pattern (machine stationary)
Pace or tape to the edge of obvious wetting
Optional
Gun: the arc wetted, e.g. 200–330. Rotating boom: 360
Width of the wetted strip in the direction of travel
c in Code Figure 2.1: left + right radius, or the boom wetted width
Used for application intensity
📐 Runs & Block Area
a in Code Figure 2.1. Average several hydrant spacings
b in Code Figure 2.1. Average several runs if they differ
Run length × run width × number of runs ÷ 10,000
🌱 Management Information
Optional. Time the machine usually takes for one run
Optional

Optional. With the machine running
📏 System Pressures

💧 Collectors

22 containers with the same known opening (over 150 mm; 9 litre buckets work well) in a line across the run, at right angles to the hose or cable. L11 and R11 go half way between the lane edge and the edge of wetting; L10 and R10 the same distance inside the lane edges; L1–L9 and R1–R9 evenly back to the centre line.

If the wetted width is no more than the run width there is no overlap: L11 and R11 are left out and ten buckets are spread across each side. Set Out Collectors fills in suggested distances; replace them with the actual distances if they differ. Record each volume against the correct position.

⏱️ Speed Test

Put a marker flag beside the hose or cable at least 5 m either side of the bucket line, visible from outside the wetted area. Time the gun cart or boom between the flags.

min s
Optional. Start to finish of the run

What is calculated

  • Irrigator speed and time for each run
  • Applied depth after adding the overlap buckets
  • Distribution uniformity and the excess water use factor
  • Application intensity, and flow worked out from the buckets
  • The speed to apply your target depth to 7/8 of the area
